Chapter 23

My mouth hung open when I realized what had knocked Ray out. That little saying about returning malevolent magic to those who cast against us had worked.

“Damn!” I whispered, backing up against the car and realizing for the first time that maybe I had some talent for magic after all. Basir landed on the roof of the car beside me and looked at me with wide eyes.

I looked at him and shook my head. “He’ll be out for a while, I think. Did you ever hear of this cousin of his, Evan?” I asked. Basir blinked twice.

“Evan knows about us, Ray broke into his house and Evan doesn't know that…how do the warlocks fit in?"

“Whoooo.”

“I don't know, either. Maybe we should keep Ray Swift Fox with us. After all, the devil you know is better than the one you don’t. And, since his cousin is with the Alliance, maybe we could use Ray for bargaining power if this gets ugly.”

“Whooo.” Basir agreed, clicking his beak in agitation.

Basir and I watched Ray’s unconscious form for a while. I ran though the possibilities in my mind. Evan had kept tabs on me, so he must have known about Master Huan’s offer. If Evan was part of the Alliance, could that make Ray part of the mysterious opposing faction? Master Huan part of it? Opposing factions didn’t exactly advertise their membership.

Ray had snooped, so apparently Evan didn’t share his information with his cousin. There were too many possibilities and too many strange things had happened in the past few days for me to figure out who was after me and why. I didn't think they'd suddenly leave me alone, so it was too late to turn back.

My best hope for information was Ray…when he regained consciousness…if he was speaking to me.

The sound of Ray’s boots scraping against the pavement brought me out of my thoughts.

“Ready to continue the exchange of information?” I asked, trying to keep my tone bored.

Ray glared at me before waggling his fingers in a gesture that looked like surrender. “You win.” He snapped, looking angry.

I smiled and walked over to him, placing my own booted foot on his sternum. “Piss me off and I’ll flatten you.” I threatened, idly.

Ray nodded. “I surrender.” He said, and shook his head sadly. “I had no idea.”

No idea of what? That I was such an incredibly powerful witch? I had no idea either.

I nodded and channeled a little energy into loosening the roots that bound him. “First you tell me what you know and then I'll decide if I’m going to let you loose or leave you for the warlocks to find.”

Ray fixed me with his stare. “I’m not part of the Alliance. I don’t know why Evan had something about you at his house, but I don’t think he’s interested in what you’re doing here. He collects information. Your name was in the information about the tree, which I am interested in finding.”

“Why didn’t you just ask him about the tree?”

“Because he doesn’t trust me and he won’t tell me anything.
